Palencia
En Palencia contamos con el buen hacer y trabajo de campo previo realizado por Carlos, crossroader desde la etapa Madrid-Valladolid. Consiguió con tiempo las reuniones y permisos que en otras partes tuvimos que improvisar. Incluso conseguimos permiso para estacionar la caravana en todo el centro de Palencia.
En principio habíamos quedado con el teniente alcalde y concejal de asuntos sociales, D. Miguel Ángel de la Fuente, a las 13:45. Debido a una confusión por el nombre “Crossroads” se pensaban que éramos un grupo de motocross que quería montar una carrera pro Palencia, así que cuando surgieron imprevistos intentaron cancelar la visita. Llamó la secretaria diciendo que el teniente alcalde estaba en un funeral y que quería saber exactamente qué queríamos y quiénes éramos para atendernos mejor. Explicamos brevemente nuestro cometido, y al saber el hombre qué hacíamos, dijo al instante que haría el esfuerzo para atendernos.
Nos recibió al fin pasadas las dos en un despacho con una mesa grande en la cual nos sentamos todos. Hicimos nuestras presentaciones y presentamos el proyecto en profundidad. Hablamos del inmenso valor de la vida humana, la necesidad de protegerla ante los ataques que sufre, y de nuestra labor de extender por España la Cultura de la Vida.
El teniente de alcalde se mostró muy receptivo. Nos contó que antes trabajaba en el área de menores y juventud, en donde había conocido casos de jóvenes que se enfrentaban a embarazos inesperados. Le parecía claro por su experiencia que quienes presentan el aborto como salida fácil realmente se lavan las manos de estas jóvenes y sus problemas. Lo necesario es apoyarlas en sus necesidades reales a ellas y a todas las mujeres embarazadas que se enfrentan a dificultades.
Al hilo de esto nos interesamos por la efectividad a nivel local en Palencia de la iniciativa de Castilla y León de apoyo integral a la maternidad. Nos alegró mucho oír, en lugar de los cambios de tema nada sutiles y la retórica sobre las competencias y la situación económica, que el ayuntamiento de Palencia subvenciona a Red Madre e incluso les facilita un local.
Ofrecimos, como es habitual, colaborar con él para la difusión de nuestro mensaje en favor de la vida en Palencia; ofrecimiento que aceptó, proponiéndonos participar en un foro de debate sobre el tema de la vida antes del congreso regional de su partido, el PP, para elevar propuestas, primero al congreso regional en otoño y luego al nacional.
Ya con ánimo de ver si por algún lado tropezaba comentamos que la reforma de Gallardón eliminando el supuesto eugenésico es a todas luces insuficiente, pues solo representa el 7% de los casos, y aún entonces podrían realizarse alegando el coladero del supuesto de peligro psíquico para la madre. Nos dio toda la razón, diciendo que lo que hace falta es una norma que proteja la vida de todos los no nacidos, y que no tiene sentido que se proteja a los enfermos y se mate a los sanos (aunque lo contrario tampoco sería aceptable, amigos lacedemonios).
Después de nuestra conversación nos pasó por el salón de plenos y sala de juntas y nos enseñó el plan para el octavo centenario de la Universidad de Palencia, que nos cuenta es la más antigua de España. Después de una breve sesión de fotos, marchamos a comer al fin.
En la comida se nos unieron algunos compañeros cuyas obligaciones nos habían arrebatado por un tiempo. Con esos refuerzos, partimos hacia la calle Mayor (bastante concurrida) para montar una mesa informativa ante el Consejo de Cuentas de Castilla y León para seguir recogiendo firmas para la campaña Aborto Cero.
Siempre es interesante montar una mesa informativa porque es cuando tienes ocasión de tratar más directamente con la gente de una ciudad. Y te encuentras de todo. Gente a favor y gente en contra, gente que te escucha e incluso se para a debatir y gente que rompe la información que les ofreces o te llaman enfermo por defender la vida. Pero lo cierto es que, por muy frustrante que sean las interacciones más desagradables, unos se queda a gusto pensando en dos cosas: primero que cada vez que regresábamos a la mesa para coger más folletos, había al menos dos personas nuevas firmando, en un incesante goteo que pronto nos llenó varias hojas de firmas; y segundo que por nuestra presencia afloró el debate, y más de una persona va a haber recibido información que de otra manera no hubiese visto nunca.
Clausuramos la mesa algo después para dirigirnos a una Eucaristía por la Vida celebrada por el Sr. obispo de Palencia, D. Esteban Escudero Torres en la iglesia de la Compañía, de la que es párroco don Feliciano, quien nos organizó la acogida y alojamiento.
En la homilía, el Sr. obispo se dirigió directamente a nosotros exhortándonos no sólo a rechazar el aborto porque es un pecado y un crimen (que lo es) sino también ahondar en la raíz del problema, que es que la sociedad está podrida porque se ha pretendido y se pretende construir una sociedad sin Dios.
Al acabar la misa saludamos a monseñor Escudero, que nos felicitó por la iniciativa y nos impartió su bendición apostólica tras tomarse un par de fotos con nosotros. Cogimos firmas también en la parroquia, tras lo cual el párroco D. Feliciano nos convidó a una cena en el restaurante San Pablo antes de llevarnos al seminario menor, en el que dormiríamos.
Como veis fue un día completo. De esos que te llenan, a pesar del trabajo, de más energía para seguir con el Camino.
